MMMMMMonday!

Happy Monday!

Today's agenda notes are:

-Field Trip Tmw - Wear PE clothes
-Read for 20 mins
-Math worksheet
-Spelling and cursive due Friday
-Book order due this week
-Picture day Oct 26
-Casual Day Oct 25

Then we started our Daily 5 stations.

After Daily 5 we went to PE with Mrs. Jans

Today for math we looked at mental math strategies using addition.

We started off looking at math problems like: 10+5=                20+7=                    10+20=
and asked why these were easy to solve. (Because they have a zero, and they are friendly numbers)

We then looked at a word problem and talked about solving this problem using mental math. NOT with the algorithm.

Forty nine grade 2 children and 33 Grade 3 children went to the science centre. How many children went to the science centre altogether?

49+30+3
49+30=79
79+3=82

OR  49+1+32  (49-à50, 33à32)
49+1=50
50+32=82

OR add the tens 40+30=70, then add the ones 9+3=12
SO  70+12=82

We then broke off into groups to work on word problems. The task was to use as many strategies to come up with our answer. This includes using pictures, numbers, words. and using different mental math strategies.

Each group presented their work to their classmates so that they can hear each other's thinking and ask questions if to clarify thinking processes.

After our presentations we started working on our worksheet.

Then we had our first lunch and recess.

After recess we had language, today we focused on spelling.

We looked at the long "i" sound, which is spelled "i_e" and also the vowel pattern "ind"
We worked in our spelling workbook and then moved into our cursive.

The spelling words for this week are:
1) wide
2) mile
3) line
4) hide
5) fire
6) nice
7) fine
8) mind
9) find
10) behind

Then we went to French with Mme. Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

After recess,  we had UOI. Today for UOI we looked at why people move from one country to another and how they feel.

We started off looking at a world map and identifying where our families come from.
We talked about push and pull factors, to get students thinking we watched a video talking about why people leave a country which are push factors and what draws people to a country which are pull factors.

Some ideas we came up with were:

We then watched a short animated video about Malak a seven year old Syrian refugee. We looked at the hardships she encountered on the way.

Today we had some very deep conversations today about natural disasters especially the ones that have recently occurred and other current events.

Finally, we handed out our agendas and homework and got ready for home time.

Fabolous Friday

Today's agenda notes are:

-Read for 20 mins
-Math worksheet
-Trip Oct 24th, Picture Day Oct 26th
-Food drive due Oct 26th
-Bake Sale Tues bring $
-Casual Day Weds

Then we worked on finishing our rough draft of our crayon letters from yesterday.

After we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

When we came back from PE we had math

Since, it's Friday we had minute math. Today's time was 6 minutes! There have been HUGE improvements in times and scores!

Then we moved on to our lesson, today we looked at using both solving both addition and subtraction problems with double digits.
We went through out strategies for using the standard algorithm.

Charlotte explained her thinking

Ojani was also very clear with his explanations!

Well done!

We drew the standard algorithm and asked each other...
How do we know which operation to use?
We circled the + or the - to make sure it's clear to us.

Then we modeled how to solve addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping.  After we spent some time as a whole class revisiting subtraction with regrouping. We used the blocks again to show how "if there is more on the floor you go next door" and exchange 1 tens unit for 10 ones.

We continued practicing with and without the blocks.

Then we had first lunch and recess.

After recess we had our spelling test! Then we went to music and French.

When we returned from second lunch and recess we continued publishing and polishing our letter
Here is a sample of a few letters.

Will post the rest on Monday! Feel free to come view them as they are on display outside our classroom!

We finished off with some golden time, and sharing time from Hunter and Alexa who shared their  experience at the cross country meet.  We also gave Amar his birthday card from the class and sang Happy Birthday for his birthday tomorrow!

Have a lovely weekend!

Terrific Thursday!

Thursday!

Today's agenda notes were:

-Spelling pg 30-33
-Cursive up to pg 30
-Read for 20 mins
-Math worksheet
-Trip Oct 24th, Picture Day Oct 26th
-Food drive due Oct 26th
-For Alexa and Hunter - bring lunch and snacks and warm clothes for tomorrow's cross country meet

Today we sent the cards and toys with Aashyra's Dad who will be handing them to Sick Kids Hospital! Thank you so much so taking them for us Mr. Ahuja!

After agendas for morning work we wrote our descriptive paragraph about the aliens from yesterdays brainstorm. Then we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

After PE we had math, today we looked at adding with regrouping and started subtracting with regrouping. We will be working on these operations tomorrow again.

We started off with addition (with and without regrouping). A couple of students helped explain their thinking.

Rayna and Esha both drew pictures and helped explain that we can't have more than 9 in the ones column so we have to carry it over to the tens.

Then we used our base ten blocks to model subtraction with regrouping.

We learned our chant: more on top, no need to stop...more on the floor, go next door (BORROW!)

We modeled with base ten blocks how to borrow from the tens column and add it to the ones column.
You cannot take away 9 from four, so you have to go next door and borrow a tens unit and exchange it for 10 ones. Then you can carry out your subtraction operations from the ones to the tens.
2-Digit Subtraction With Regrouping Anchor Chart
As we were getting ready to start our guided practice sheets we received a friendly visit from....
ImageImage
The police! They were able to ask questions about helping the community! It was a perfect fit for our last UOI unit.

After we had first lunch and recess.

When we returned, we had literacy. For literacy since we are working on letter writing. We re-read the book "The Day the Crayons Quit" Before reading I told them to think of a crayon they want to be because they will also be writing a letter to Duncan! After reading we talked about the letter format, and writing with details (thinking about how the character is feeling, and adjectives)

We are still working on our rough draft and will be polishing up the work tomorrow!

Then we went to French with Mme. Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

To end the day we had UOI today we looked at the evolution of transportation from then to now. We discussed how modes of transportation have changed. For example NOW there are cars, and THEN there were carriages. We compared each mode of transportation and listed reasons why one is better or more evolved. (like Pokemon)

Students then completed their worksheet picking modes of transportation from THEN to NOW and discussed them in detail.

Finally, to end the day we handed out agendas and homework and got ready for home.

Wednesday!

Our morning assembly consisted of a presentation by MYP students who informed us of the natural disasters that have occurred in the world these past few months.

Also Alister announced to the school about his food drive, that he planned as part of his UOI project. Aashrith is also helping to organise the food drive, and all of the grade 2's will be helping these students. Aryana helped Alister speak in front of the school as Aashrith was not here yet. Way to be risk takers!

Today agenda's notes were:

Spelling pg 30-33
Cursive up to pg 30
Read for 20 mins
Math worksheet
Trip Oct 24th
Picture Day Oct 26th

Also, new book orders have been sent home and the students who ordered last month received their order today.

Then we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

After PE we had math. We reviewed double digit addition (without carrying over) using the base ten blocks and standard algorithm and then we moved on to double digit addition with carrying over.
Image result for double digit addition with regrouping poster
There were ten ones so we traded them for 1 tens unit instead and that's why it's now represented in the tens place.

We used base ten blocks to show that when there is 10 or more ones in the ones place we have to trade it in for a tens unit so that means carrying over.

We did a few problems together before going to our worksheet. Some students stayed with me on the carpet to work more closely with guided practice on using the base ten blocks and then moving to the standard algorithm.

We will be spending some more time on this. A homework sheet has been sent home and I also found this fun game to play online to practice double digit addition:

http://www.mathplayground.com/ASB_Canoe_Puppies.html

After math it was first lunch and recess.

After recess we had literacy. We reviewed the letter format, and co-constructed our concluding sentence. We also highlighted some special sentence openers to help us in our writing.

I marked and corrected their letters from yesterday and gave them feedback to improve. They were given time to do that and then received a letter template for their polished work. Also house points for using the word migrate in their letter.

Then it was time for music and French.

Then we had second lunch and recess.

After recess we continued polishing our letters. After we talked about descriptive writing and adding details to our sentences through using adjectives. I read a short blurb about aliens that landed and we brainstormed adjectives to describe their head, eyes, ears, body, smell, and how they sound.

Today Quinntin also got to go to the SK to read to them as part of his UOI project. He is sharing his talent of reading to younger students! Great work Quinntin!

Then we hand out our agendas, book orders and homework and got ready for home!

Tuesday!

Today's agenda notes are:

Spelling pg 30-33 (due Fri)
Cursive up to page 30 (due Fri)
Math worksheet
Trip Oct 24th
Picture Day Oct 26th

Also parents and guardians please remember to get November lunch orders in:

Then we had our class read aloud with "Ghost Towns". We read a few pages together really focusing on the reading strategies to help us with our fluency and comprehension. We did some phrasing together and discussion of non-fiction text features such as using a glossary and diagram.

After we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

After we had math!
Today's learning goal for math is double digit addition using place value and the standard algorithm
Standard Algorithm
We started off with a word problem:

Aashyra has 36 cookies and Rayna has 12 cookies. How many cookies do they have altogether?

We solved this problem first using base ten blocks to represent pictures and then using the standard algorithm. We discussed that we always need to start from the ones (we go right to left!) I purposely made some mistakes by starting on the left so that they would call me out on it!) After we did this as a class and with the blocks we went to work independently on a couple of addition questions.

Afterwards, we did double digit subtraction using standard algorithm and with pictures and blocks.
Then we completed our worksheet.
59- 21 gives us...
38!

Addition problems without carrying over have been sent home for practice and homework.

Then we had first lunch and recess.

After recess, we had our daily 5 stations and then moved on to journal writing. We received a message from a girl from India named Fatima who is planning on moving to Canada and we have to convince her why she should come to St. Jude's Academy. She asked for a letter back so we used our letter writing skills we have been working on to write a letter to her.

We brainstormed ideas and then talked about sentence openers to help our writing. We also went through our COPS checklist that shows we we proofread our own work.

After we went to French with Mme. Stella, then we had second lunch and recess.

After recess, we took some time to work on our letters and we started UOI. Today we looked at objects and technology from then to now but we focused on transportation. We watched a video to show us visually how things have changed then we sorted images to compare technology from then to now. Tomorrow we will be focusing on transportation and explaining how it has changed.

Then we handed out agendas and got ready for home!

Monday!

Welcome back!

Today's agendas notes were:

Spelling pg. 30-33
Cursive up to pg 30 (was not sent home)
Math Worksheet
Read for 20 mins

Then we had a class read aloud using reciprocal reading to help us understand reading.

How it works:
1) Predict (using pictures, text, captions, and using prior knowledge)
2) Read (read the text)
3) Clarify (what words don't we understand, what can we do to understand them?)
4) Question (we get to be the person quizzing; what kind of questions would be on a test?)
5) Summarise (a summary in our own words of what we read)

After we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

After PE we had math!

We recapped our learning from last week using fact family houses and how to use counters to find the missing number.

We started off with a word problem and how to read and respond to a word problem. Together we came up with strategies to help us understand what word problems are asking us, such as what operation to use (addition or subtraction) how to show our thinking (pictures, numbers and words) and responding in a sentence.

Afterwards, we looked at finding the missing number using related facts.

Each pair received a triangle with a couple of numbers. They had to use Lego pieces with their partner to figure out the missing number or numbers.

We modeled a few examples of related facts and ones that don't work and how to find the missing number.

Then we went on to our worksheet.
There was a challenge to find the suspect who stole the pencils!

Then we had first lunch and recess.

After lunch and recess we had spelling. We looked at our spelling words and how to use them to help us spell words that rhyme. We focused on the long a sound in words (eg. late, came, tape) and how they can help us spell other words (eg. plate, blame, grape)

Spelling words this week are:
1) save
2) lake
3) face
4) same
5) gate
6) rake
7) tape
8) sail
9) paint
10) afraid

Then we had music with Mr. Oliver, and French with Mme. Stella.
Afterwards we went to second lunch and recess.

After recess, we had a few friends present their UOI project. Thank you!

Hunter promoting his recycling campaign! He will be going around St. Jude's to speak to classes about the importance of recycling

Jad presenting his toy dinosaur for the children at the hospital

Amar presenting his toy dinosaur to the children at the hospital
Rohaan presenting his card and paper airplane for the children at Sick Kids.

Great work to everyone on their first UOI project! I'm very proud of their work and for being risk takers!
After we kicked off our new UOI unit which is:
 Transdisciplinary theme: Who we Are
    Title: On the move
Central Idea: People choose different ways to migrate from one place to another and
    Lines of inquiry:
-Transportation then and now
-Reasons people choose to migrate

-Effects on the receiving country after migration

We brainstormed a  Transdisciplinary theme: Who we Are
    Title: On the move
Central Idea: People choose different ways to migrate from one place to another and
    Lines of inquiry:
-Transportation then and now
-Reasons people choose to migrate (😱This would make a great bonus word!!)
-Effects on the receiving country after migration

We completed a pre-assessment activity looking at all the different forms of transportation that we already know about and how they are used. Tomorrow we will come up with questions for our I wonder wall.

Then we handed our our homework and agendas and got ready for home.

Friday...the 13th!

Today we started off with agenda which included:

-Read for 20 mins
-Math worksheet

Quite a short one!

DRA's have been sent home, if you have any questions please let me know.

Then we continued writing our letter to Urvi. We talked about other subjects, sentence openers, using adjectives, nouns, and verbs in our writing, and describing feelings in the letter.

After, we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

When we came back from PE, we had math. We started off with minute math; this week the time was 9 minutes and next week 8! After we marked our sheets together  we talked about fact families again, and what we have been learning throughout the week. Then, we moved on to our math activity centres.

One station was subtraction triangles, which are a puzzle, where we had to figure out what number fits into the puzzle so that when you subtract the two numbers the one below it is the correct answer.

It is a bit tricky!

Another station was fastest facts with cards. We had to flip over two cards with a partner and add the sum. The person who replied quicker and correct took the pile.

The third station was building our fact family houses with 3 digits. This meant creating two addition sentences and two subtraction sentences.

The final station was sunken treasure; students worked against each other to reach the treasure by answering addition and subtraction sentences. If they got it wrong they had to go back to the beginning.

After math we had first lunch and recess. Then we had literacy.

For literacy today we started off with our spelling test. The bonus words were: DRUMROLL:

1) addition
2) pattern
3) letter
4) house
5) greeting

These words have been used in class and most are around the room!

After literacy we went over letter writing again. We went over a letter format using the letter we wrote to Urvi. We talked about editing through our COPS checklist and then were given a few letters to edit.

C- Capitals
O- Organisation
P- Punctuation
S-Spelling

Then we had French with Mme. Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

To end our lessons we had our UOI presentations, here are a few photos from the presentations!

Aryana presenting her card for Seniors

Ayden presenting his toy hockey and basketball game for the children at the hospital with Jad and Quinntin helping him present
Quinntin presenting his plan to read to the SK students.
Rayen presenting his cards with kind messages
Alister promoting his food drive!

To cap off our day we had our September awards assembly, our award winner for September was Esha. We celebrated the IB learner profile inquirer. Congratulations Esha!

Have a wonderful weekend!
