Then we had our class read aloud with "Ghost Towns". We read a few pages together really focusing on the reading strategies to help us with our fluency and comprehension. We did some phrasing together and discussion of non-fiction text features such as using a glossary and diagram.
After we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.
After we had math!
Today's learning goal for math is double digit addition using place value and the standard algorithm
Standard Algorithm
We started off with a word problem:Aashyra has 36 cookies and Rayna has 12 cookies. How many cookies do they have altogether?
We solved this problem first using base ten blocks to represent pictures and then using the standard algorithm. We discussed that we always need to start from the ones (we go right to left!) I purposely made some mistakes by starting on the left so that they would call me out on it!) After we did this as a class and with the blocks we went to work independently on a couple of addition questions.
Afterwards, we did double digit subtraction using standard algorithm and with pictures and blocks.
Then we completed our worksheet.

Addition problems without carrying over have been sent home for practice and homework.
Then we had first lunch and recess.
After recess, we had our daily 5 stations and then moved on to journal writing. We received a message from a girl from India named Fatima who is planning on moving to Canada and we have to convince her why she should come to St. Jude's Academy. She asked for a letter back so we used our letter writing skills we have been working on to write a letter to her.
We brainstormed ideas and then talked about sentence openers to help our writing. We also went through our COPS checklist that shows we we proofread our own work.
After we went to French with Mme. Stella, then we had second lunch and recess.
After recess, we took some time to work on our letters and we started UOI. Today we looked at objects and technology from then to now but we focused on transportation. We watched a video to show us visually how things have changed then we sorted images to compare technology from then to now. Tomorrow we will be focusing on transportation and explaining how it has changed.
Then we handed out agendas and got ready for home!
