Today's agenda notes were not written they are the same as yesterday and it is:
-Holiday package BINGO due Jan 10 (5 house points for a completed BINGO sheet (5 in a row) and 10 for a full package completed)
-Cultural artifact due Jan 10
-NO school Friday


We had a long assembly this morning because we had our monthly communicator awards. Our communicator this month is Amar. 


We also had our ugly sweater competition


Miss Simsic won with Mr Foster in second and Miss Ross in third.

We also announced the science fair winners. Our class came in second!
After we returned to class we played 'Pin the nose on rudolph'

This was very entertaining as some students stuck his nose on the traffic light or an anchor chart! We had to move Rudolph around because students were getting it no problem, or have other students pretend to be Rudolph.



Students were also given the choice to complete a coloured numbering activity and Christma puzzles.
After we went for lunch and recess.

When we returned we played Christmas bingo.



Then we went to French with Mme Stella, and second lunch and recess.

To end the day we hand out our cards, had golden time and cleaned up our classroom and cubby area.

Dear SJA Parents and Guardians,

As you are aware, the re-registration season is upon us and we have recently sent home packages with your child(ren). We value your loyalty and commitment to our school community and would love to continue our partnership by offering priority enrollment for our current SJA families.

We kindly ask that you take a moment to review your financial statement and complete the information in the package and make any necessary changes to your place of residence, employment, email changes or any medical information that the administration should be aware of.

Please be aware that in order to secure your child’s enrolment, it is imperative that you submit your re-enrollment package and fees no later than February 12, 2018 at 4:00pm. After this date, all available grade-level spaces will be open to our families on waitlists who will then have the opportunity to secure any vacant positions.

After we finished reading 'The Little Fir Tree.' The story is about a fir tree that aspires to be taken home by people and decorated for a Christmas celebration. Finally he gets his chance and experiences the happiest two days of his life as he watches the family open gifts, laugh, and sing. Although the tree experiences some loneliness when he is placed outside, he finds hope in sharing his adventures with the garden plants.



Then we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.



After we build graham cracker houses!


We used graham crackers, vanilla frosting, fruit loops (the ones we DID NOT use for math from the box aha, sprinkles, smarties, and chocolate chips)










After we had first lunch and recess.


When we returned we created our s'ELF'ies.







Then we went to French with Mme. Stella.


We had an early second lunch so that we can be ready for the grade 3-6 afternoon concert. We watched them perform and got to see 'Christmas around the world' and heard Christmas songs in the native country's language.

Tuesday 19 December 2017

Today was our field trip to Benares Historic House. We explored the historic house and learned a lot about how the family celebrated Christmas and we also learned about other celebrations in the winter. Students were split into 3 smaller groups and rotated through stations and different parts of the house.


Here we are learning about how Christmas was celebrated.

You cannot eat these! They are preserved in lots of salt!

The games room! Students saw how families kept entertained without technology!

The piano! Which played itself with the foot pedals and had the lyrics so the family could stand behind and sing along.



The children's room. We saw a stuffed owl here, some rollerskates, a dollhouse, and some toy weapons because the children's father was away at war.

In the kitchen!




We made something called crackers which children will pull apart later and inside has a surprise.



After lunch we rotated through stations to explore different celebrations that occur during winter.

We then finished off our trip with a `fire`and ate the cookies we made and had some warm cider.


Monday 18 December 2017

Today's agenda notes:

-Field trip tomorrow please be here at 8:40am and bring a disposable lunch and wear full uniforms.
-No school Friday
-Spirit day Thursday (wear white, green and or red)


After agendas we did some math review in order to refresh our minds for the test later today. We reviewed creating arrays, writing multiplication and division sentences.

Then we had PE with Mrs. Jans.


For math today we had our unit test on multiplication and division.


Then we had first lunch and recess.


Afterwards, we did holiday language activities. Students worked on using holiday words for crosswords, word searches, and proofreading and editing sentences with the COPS checklist.


Next, we went to music with Mr. Oliver and French with Mme. Stella.

After second recess we did our Ontario Writing Assessment on writing an explanation of a super robot!

Students were asked to:
-write about how their robot works
-describe it using adjectives
-ensure that we are writing detailed sentences
-check our work using the COPS checklist


Students were given their holiday package to do over to holidays.

Today's agenda notes:

Today's holiday tale was 'The Gift of the Magi.'

Then we had PE with Mrs. Jans.

We finished reading the story after PE. This story is  about a husband and wife who are challenged to buy each other gifts because they have very little money. Della sold her hair to buy Jim a platinum fob chain for his watch and Jim sold his watch to buy Della precious combs for her hair. We discussed the author's message in the book.

When finished reading we finished our journal entries about our favourite holiday and why.

Then we moved on to UOI. We read a story titled 'Rashad's Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr.

Throughout the story we asked questions to check for understanding.

After reading we compared and contrasted Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr to Christmas in a Venn-diagram.
Here is what we came up with.

Then we had first lunch and recess.

After we had  our spelling test:

The bonus words are:

4) driveway
5) yesterday

Afterwards,we created snowmen or 'women' bio-glyphs about ourselves.



Then we went to French with Mme. Stella.



When we returned after second lunch and recess we finished up our snowmen and painted ornaments before having some Golden time.




Alexa and Charlotte took their ornaments home as they are on an early holiday!

Then we got ready for home time!

Today's agenda notes:

After we read the 12 Days of Christmas as our Christmas tale. Students joined in while reading aloud the tale.


For math today we had our multiplication and division review. As a class, we went through how to answer word problems related to multiplication and division using pictures numbers and words.

We discussed how do we know be aware of the words that indicate if we need to multiply, divide, add, or subtract.


Then we had first lunch and recess. Today students have not gone outside because of the extreme cold alert!

We had a little bit of a different day with our structure.
After indoor recess we had French with Mme. Stella, then we began our journal writing. Students are asked to write about their favourite holiday and why.

We brainstormed a list of holidays and began our shared writing.

My favourite holiday is _______ because (give the reasons why). In order to celebrate it, we (what do we do with our family, friends, in school, etc)

So when does ______ happen?

It happens during ____________.

Afterwards we had second lunch and recess indoors.


We were then special guests to Oakwood's Christmas concert. We supported them and watched their lovely performance!

Great job to our friends at Oakwood!

When we returned we continued our writing about our favourite holiday. We will continue to finish this tomorrow.

Today's agenda notes:

-Raz Kids for 20 minutes
-Math unit test December 18th
-Spelling pg 61-64

Also tomorrow is the last day of the book fair, if your child would like to purchase a book, or stationary please send in the money and a note in their agenda indicating so.


After we had a class read aloud, the story we read today was 'The Shoemaker and the Elves'

As we read we answered we make predictions, clarified new words, asked questions for comprehension, and summarised what we read. This is reciprocal reading.


After we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.


When we returned we started our math review. We reviewed the big ideas we learned this unit which included

-Multiplication as repeated addition
-Modeling multiplication as arrays and equal groups
-Modeling division as arrays
-Relating multiplication and division
-New vocabulary including factors, product, dividend, divisor, quotient

Students received their review package and are asked to complete up to pg. 3. We will be doing review again tomorrow.

After, we went to first lunch and recess.


After we had UOI and worked on finishing up our cultural flag research.

After recess, some students finished up their cultural flag then we moved on to our next UOI lesson which is learning about how birthdays are celebrated in different countries.

First we read the text together and discussed what non-fiction means and that we are learning facts.

We read about each country together and briefly wrote a few notes and pictures to help our memory. After students paired up and worked on their 'Birthdays around the world' quiz in partners. They were given a copy of the text to re-read and answer the comprehension questions.
