MMMMMMonday!

Happy Monday!

Today's agenda notes are:

-Field Trip Tmw - Wear PE clothes
-Read for 20 mins
-Math worksheet
-Spelling and cursive due Friday
-Book order due this week
-Picture day Oct 26
-Casual Day Oct 25

Then we started our Daily 5 stations.

After Daily 5 we went to PE with Mrs. Jans

Today for math we looked at mental math strategies using addition.

We started off looking at math problems like: 10+5=                20+7=                    10+20=
and asked why these were easy to solve. (Because they have a zero, and they are friendly numbers)

We then looked at a word problem and talked about solving this problem using mental math. NOT with the algorithm.

Forty nine grade 2 children and 33 Grade 3 children went to the science centre. How many children went to the science centre altogether?

49+30+3
49+30=79
79+3=82

OR  49+1+32  (49-à50, 33à32)
49+1=50
50+32=82

OR add the tens 40+30=70, then add the ones 9+3=12
SO  70+12=82

We then broke off into groups to work on word problems. The task was to use as many strategies to come up with our answer. This includes using pictures, numbers, words. and using different mental math strategies.

Each group presented their work to their classmates so that they can hear each other's thinking and ask questions if to clarify thinking processes.

After our presentations we started working on our worksheet.

Then we had our first lunch and recess.

After recess we had language, today we focused on spelling.

We looked at the long "i" sound, which is spelled "i_e" and also the vowel pattern "ind"
We worked in our spelling workbook and then moved into our cursive.

The spelling words for this week are:
1) wide
2) mile
3) line
4) hide
5) fire
6) nice
7) fine
8) mind
9) find
10) behind

Then we went to French with Mme. Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

After recess,  we had UOI. Today for UOI we looked at why people move from one country to another and how they feel.

We started off looking at a world map and identifying where our families come from.
We talked about push and pull factors, to get students thinking we watched a video talking about why people leave a country which are push factors and what draws people to a country which are pull factors.

Some ideas we came up with were:

We then watched a short animated video about Malak a seven year old Syrian refugee. We looked at the hardships she encountered on the way.

Today we had some very deep conversations today about natural disasters especially the ones that have recently occurred and other current events.

Finally, we handed out our agendas and homework and got ready for home time.
