Thursday Sept 21, 2017

Today we started our day off with agendas. There was a lot to write in today's agenda, and they worked very well this morning to complete what was on the agenda and start their math centres in the time before PE! However there are some things to be aware of that was a lot for them to write this morning.

  1. Read for 20 minutes
  2. Math worksheet
  3. Spelling test tomorrow
  4. International Day research is due on Monday about Pakistan. Each child will be given a topic to research about. They are also being asked to also bring in 3-4 pictures related to their topic (colour if possible) along with their research. (We've changed the country as for the support that will be given for the country by parents in the class - thank you!)
  5. Food Bank items for our trip on October 3
  6. Two dollars in support of Terry Fox
  7. BBQ form is due September 27
  8. St. Jude’s and Oakwood Welcome BBQ will take place on Monday October 2.
  9. Bake Sale on Tuesday September 27 – The Grade 2’s will be running the bake sale. If possible, parents are being asked to bring in peanut-free items on this day. Also students can bring in money on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Bake Sale
Here are some photos from our math centres! Today we had math games, math with a buddy, and math on your own. Tomorrow they will get to try a different station.

After they went to PE.

After PE, we had our math lesson. Today we looked at rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We started off with a problem and visual on the board... I live at house number 162 and the bus only stops at  house 100 and 200 so which stop would I get off at? They were able to tell me that I should get off to house 200 because it is closer. We then tried different numbers to check for understanding. After,  I introduced them to the rounding coaster, and a chant. We did the actions with our bodies. (1,2,3,4 down to the floor, 5,6,7,8,9 up to the sky line) We then played a short game where they would either go up or down for the number.

After math we had first lunch and recess.

After recess we had literacy, students were asked to write about a time when they had to make a decision. This is related to our unit of inquiry as yesterday's lesson was on decision making.
We co-constructed our success criteria which was: capitals, periods, reasons, choice, adjectives and the challenge of our conjunctions (connecting words) such as also, but, and then.

After literacy it was French with Mme. Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

Then it was time for UOI, today we looked at laws and their purposes. We talked about how we created our rules as a class at the beginning of the year and read a story called "What if everybody did that?" We also talked about the consequences and rewards of following rules and laws. Afterwards students created their own laws and explained why they are important.

And then it was time for home, we handed out homework, agendas and the welcome back BBQ form.

Have a wonderful night!

Wacky Wednesday

Today we started our day off with agendas as usual, we are getting quicker at writing them!
The notes for today are:

Book order
Read for 20 minutes
Math worksheet
Spelling and Cursive if not complete
Toonie for Terry
Food drive item (Oct 3)

Bell work was completing math challenges related to patterning.

Then we went to PE with Mrs Jans

After PE we had math! Today we created a number line with clothespins and string

Today we looked at comparing numbers on a number line, and filling in the spaces. As a class we created our timeline. We had benchmark numbers and then students were asked to pin their number on the clothesline. Afterwards we looked at how this would look on a number line on paper. We learned that we need to draw a dot and an arrow to represent where we are making our estimate for a number.

We worked on the textbook questions in class and the math sheet has been sent home for homework. No textbook tonight!

After math we had first lunch and recess.

After recess we had literacy. We reviewed what nouns, verbs and adjectives are and we looked at creating proper sentences. We identified each of those features of writing in sentences together and then we took some broken sentences and made them full sentences with adjectives, nouns, and verbs. After, students worked in pairs or groups of three to put together more broken sentences.

After we had music with Mr Oliver and then French with Mme. Stella, then it was time for second lunch and recess.

After recess we had UOI. For UOI we had our election, students privately went behind their booths and cast their vote of whether to keep math or not! After the vote we tallied the results and shockingly even after yesterday's debate and outpour the students voted to get rid of MATH! AH!
the votes were 10 to 7 which was very close. (Of course we are not getting rid of math)

We then looked at a video of how voting has changed. We discussed how children cannot vote and only adults over 18 can. We looked at the past and present and how women were not allowed to vote in the past. We also talked about how it is important to vote when you get the change to do so because in some countries there is no choice!

Then it was time for home.

Cheers!!

Terrific Tuesday

We started our day off with agendas today's notes read:

-Bake sale (I will be e-mailing you all about this) Our class along with a few others are responsible for the bake sale next week. If you are able to and would like to bring in some good please feel free to; more details on the way:) )
-Read for 20 mins
-Math page 13-15 Q1-6 (We completes our number lines in class) I have sent home a worksheet
-Spelling pg 10-13 (if not completed)
-Cursive pg. 10-11 (if not completed)
-Toonie for Terry
-Food Drive donation

After we watched a short video on Terry Fox; they had a lot of questions about amputees, what is cancer, why did Terry lose his leg, and were very interested. They were very impacted by his story, as they went to run in PE with Mrs. Jans I observed them running and saying WE RUN FOR TERRY!

After PE we went outside to start Math. We created a number line with our bodies and each student represented a number. We tossed a ball counting by 2's starting from 1's, and then from 2's. The first time through for each team their times were over 45 seconds, but then the second time they improved to under 30 seconds.

When we came back in we displayed a number line on chart paper, we filled it in together and started skip counting on it. We skip counted by 2's, 5's and 10's...but we had a problem! What do we do if the number cuts off! We have to continue down to the next line

We practiced and modeled as a class skip counting forwards and backwards on the number line. After they moved into their independent questions and completed question 1 a and b in the textbook and then I gave them the rest of the questions on the board which were counting by 2, 5, and 10's forward and backwards with the number line for numbers 1-50. The homework sheet is in their agenda.

After math we had first lunch and recess, we were greeted by students from Oakwood for the Bake Sale!

After lunch and recess we had a discussion about international day. The country that we will be researching and presenting on is...Trinidad and Tobago...I asked the students to find out a fact tonight about it. If you are able to help out on this day please let me know, in any way possible.

After we did literacy. We reviews nouns, verbs, and started to look at adjectives today. We learned that they are describing words for nouns. We came up with a few sentences together and then the students worked independently on their own sentences.

In order to be successful we co constructed our success criteria which was:

  • Adjective
  • Noun
  • Capitals
  • Periods
After literacy we had second lunch and recess.

After recess we had a few math problems to lead the way into UOI. For example I asked students what 4 tens and 3 ones were and they responded 43 or drew a picture on the wall. I then broke the news to the students that we are no longer doing MATH!!!!!! They were absolutely ANGRY at me! They love math!

I told them that today we are learning about decision making skills and we have to come up with reasons for and against keep math. We brainstormed a few reasons for (we need to for our jobs later, we need it when we go to  groceries to buy stuff) and a few reasons against (It takes a lot of time, we need time to play) Then they broke off into partners and debated against each other. Afterwards, Esha and Rohaan did a tableau for us with their ideas.

Afterwards, we finished off our heroes in the community activity and handed out homework and got ready for home.

Cheers!

Marvelous Monday

Today we started off with a special presentation. Ms. Melissa from War Amps delivered a presentation to us today about War Amps and provided some very valuable information on amputees. We learned a lot and the students had a lot of questions.

After we went outside for PE with Mrs. Jans.

After PE we had math. We spent a lot of time exploring as a class and working collaboratively. We first reviewed patterns on a hundred chart and then moved on to extending patterns beyond hundreds counting in 2, 5 and 10's. We realised that the patterns are the same even if the hundreds value increases!!! So if he count by 5's on a hundreds chart, it will be the same pattern on a beyond hundreds chart.

Jordan is showing us a pattern counting by 5's; he covered the numbers 3,8,13 18, 23, 28, 33, 38, 43, 48. I then covered the hundreds chart for them to figure out the rest of the pattern. They realised the ones pattern is 3,8,3,8,3,8 and the tens pattern is 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4... can you figure out the rest of the pattern?

After we counted we did patterns of 2,5,10 starting and ending at different numbers on the beyond hundreds chart and noticed the same patterns.

Next, we started to explore counting by 25's. I asked them to choose a number that ends in 25 to start with and we decided to start with 125. They worked in partners on their charts to count by 25's. As a class we figured out the pattern visually on the charts and in the place value chart.

I added a section for math games related to our unit. The link is on the right side.

Then they started working in their textbooks.

Afterwards we had first lunch and recess.

After lunch and recess we took some time to work on our math textbooks.

Then we had music with Mr. Oliver, and French with Mme Stella

Then we had second lunch and recess.

After lunch and recess we wrote agendas since we had our special presentation in the morning.
Here was today's message:
-Read for 20 minutes (RAZ KIDS!!!!!!)
-Math pg. 33 Q1-5 ext. 5-6
-Spelling pg. 10-13
-Cursive pg. 10-11
-Food drive donation
-Book order
-Toonies for Terry

Then we worked on spelling, here is the list of words for this week, the list will stay up in the top right corner:
1) let
2) his
3) had
4) ask
5) old
6) took
7) also
8) sat
9) fell
10) get

After spelling we worked on cursive writing, the letters: d and g. Then we handed out our homework and agendas and got ready for home.

Cheers!

Friday!

Today we started our day off with agendas:

  • Read for 20 minutes
  • Book order
  • Math page 11 1-6
After we went to PE with Mrs Jans.

After PE we had math!

Today we looked at patterns using a hundreds chart. We explored counting by 2's, 5's and 10's starting at different numbers. We noticed that you can start at any number and count from there, and can still count by 2's, 5's and 10's (Ex. start at 5 and count by 2's up to 37) We recognised that in each column the value of the ones are the same.

After math is was time for lunch and recess.

After recess it was time for our much anticipated spelling test! The students did very well! Our bonus words were: claw, and thrill.

After spelling we took some time to finish off our UOI community heroes plate.

Then it was time for French with Mme. Stella.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

After recess we worked on math. we moved on from colouring our patterns on our hundreds chart to more specifically describing them in words.

To end the day we had TRIBES time which is where we spend a short amount of time to build classroom community.  We played a game called pattern maker which focused on inclusion and participation among everyone.

Have a great weekend!

September 14, 2017

Today we started our day off with agendas as usual, today's notes were:
  • Cursive pg 8-9 (if not completed yet)
  • Read for 20 minutes
  • Student handbook form
  • Math
    • page 7 q1, page 8 q5 (WE FINISHED IN CLASS TODAY!)
    • page 2 q1 a,b (this is on a separate sheet)
  • Book order
***Our spelling quiz is tomorrow, there is also a letter about international day in their agenda, if you are interested in helping out please feel free to comment or e-mail me. I will be sending out further details.***

Then we had PE with Mrs Jans

After PE we had math, today we looked at patterns and counting on a hundred chart. I gave the students some exploration time to colour patterns on our hundreds charts, afterwards I asked them to explain to me what their patterns meant. They were able to explain that they were counting in 2's, 5's, and 10's. (Each pair of students tried different patterns)

We then looked at patterns together as a class and defined what rows, columns and diagonal means. We found out something neat... that if you have a diagonal line the digits add to the same number! We also noticed that if you travel down the same column the value of the tens increases by 1 ten each row.

After math we had our first lunch and recess.

After recess we stayed outside for our literacy lesson. We talked about what verbs are and played a game of Simon says with only verbs.

After literacy we had music and after music we had French!

After that it was time for second lunch and recess.

After recess it was time for UOI. Today we looked at determining heroes in a community. We designed a paper plate with paper hands around it with our community heroes and what they do.

After UOI we tidied up, handed out homework and got ready for home.

Cheers!

September 13, 2017

Today we were introduced to Mrs. Patricia who will be helping our class Wednesday-Friday until April.

We started our day off writing agendas, today's notes are:

  • Bring in headphones
  • Read for 20 minutes
  • Student handbook form
  • Math pages 29-30
    • Question 1,2a,c,e,f 3a,b,c,f, 4,5,6a,b,c,7
  • Cursive writing page 8-9 (those that did not finish in class)
  • Scholastic book order
You will be receive an invoice for the trip on Freshbooks.

After agendas we went to PE

After PE we had math. We looked at modelling 3 digit numbers today. We were able to successfully build and model three digit numbers, decomposing and composing the number 178 looking at the many ways we can represent it. We worked on our secret number activity again but this time with a number between 100 and 1000. They were able to identify that there must be more than 1 hundred in the hundreds column and no more than 9 for the number to qualify. Afterwards, as a class we looked at writing our numbers in words and co-constructed a chart to help us write numbers to words. We wrote the word form for numbers 1-10, 10-90 (counting by tens), and 100-900 (counting by hundreds) in words. Then we moved on to the textbook questions.

Whose finger is that!? *cough* Alister :)

After math it was time for first lunch and recess

After recess we took some more time to work on math then moved on to cursive writing! We modelled as a class the steps to form letters c and a, and then moved on to writing in our new cursive writing books.

After we did literacy and discussed what a noun is. We know that a noun is a person, place or thing! We then brainstormed some nouns as it relates to our UOI unit. For example, on our chart the person we described as a firefighter works at a fire station and he or she uses a hose or a firetruck! We then moved on to our independent group task which was sorting people, places, and things.

Nice pose Esha!

Afterwards, we went to French with Mme. Stella.

After that it was time for second lunch and recess!

After recess we had UOI. For UOI our learning objective was: what does it mean to be a good citizen? We watched a short video to explain some ways we can be a good citizen. Afterwards we brainstormed as a class ways we can be a good citizen. Next we moved on to our independent task which included drawing ourselves and writing our ways we can be a good citizen. Students chose 2 or 3 ways they can be a good citizen!

To conclude, we handed out homework and agendas. We have scholastic book order forms with some very exciting book, games and other stuff!

September 12, 2017

Today we started our day off a little bit differently.

If you are here before 8:30 you will be signed into before care, if it's after 8:30 please go directly to the classroom to hang up your bags, change your shoes and start writing the agenda. I will be there!

After assembly we wrote our agendas. Today's notes are:
-Bring in headphones
-Trip form
-Read for 20 minutes
-Student handbook form
-Math pages 23-24 Questions 1,2, 4ab, 6c, 7
The reflection is an extension.

Then we went to PE with Mrs Jans.

After PE we had math in which we looked at modelling 2 digit numbers. To start off we built given numbers with the base ten blocks, and afterwards we played a "secret number" game with a partner in which one partner choose a number on the hundreds chart and built it with manipulatives, then the other partner had to guess what it was. Then they switched roles.

Afterwards, we started our independent math work from the textbook. In this we looked at writing numbers that were represented with base ten blocks, drawing base ten blocks when given a number.

Then we had first lunch and recess.

After recess we had music with Mr. Oliver.

Then we continued working on math. Here we started to recognise and write the numbers in words.

After math we went to French.

After French we had second lunch and recess.

To end the day we finished off with our OWA writing pre-assessment. Students were asked to brainstorm and write a letter of a recount to a friend that missed a day of school. They worked hard and independently to complete this. Again this pre-assessment is for me to know what the student's know.

Monday, 11 September 2017

September 11, 2017

Today we started our day off with our assembly.

After assembly we wrote agendas in which the notes were:
  • Bring in headphones (these can be purchased cheap at the Dollar store as well)
  • Trip Form
  • Read for 20 minutes
  • Student handbook form (this was in the Welcome e-mail I sent out in August)
  • Math (if students didn't finish in class)
    • pg 19 Questions 1,2,3,4,5
    • Extension: 6,7
  • Spelling (if students didn't finish in class)
  • Cursive(pg 8-9) (ignore this for today, we did not get to do this today but since students write agendas first thing in the morning they already wrote it)
After they went to PE with Mrs. Jans

When they came back we started our patterning and problem solving unit looking at grouping and counting to 100. To start off I gave each group several objects to group and count.

Two groups had beads
One group had clothespins
One group had paper clips

The students were able to group their objects into groups of ten working as a team and realised that they can add on the left over objects that weren't enough for a group of 10. We then went to work in our textbooks and notebooks and I realised that before they worked straight in math workbooks so we took some time to talk about how to work and write math in our new notebooks. Presentation and pace is still up and coming!

We also had a whole-school announcement today to commemorate the events of September 11. The students were very interested in hearing about it.

After math we went for first lunch and recess.

After recess we took some time to finish up math, unfinished work has been sent home.

Next, we started our spelling. (Please see the section on the right for our spelling words this week) We worked on missing consonants, completing sentences, a crossword, and making sentences.

This week's spelling words are:
1) fox
2) cut
3) hill
4) wind
5) put
6) all
7) moon
8) saw
9) tell
10) new

Next, we went to French with Mme. Stella.

After we had second lunch and recess.

After recess we had our unit of inquiry. We looked at the roles of key members in our community. We defined what a community is and brainstormed some community helpers before going on the tablets to investigate community helpers and their roles.

Cheers to a great Monday! Eat healthy and get lots of rest. :)

Friday, 8 September 2017

Happy First Friday!

Happy first Friday of our short week!

Thank you parents for everything this week in terms of getting the students prepared for the school year and returning several forms.

Today we started off our day completing our agendas in which the notes were:

  • Bring in headphones
  • Trip forms due Monday
  • Read for 20 minutes
  • Student Handbook form
  • All about me bag (some students did not get to present today as we had house games so I sent them home in case they needed to bring stuff home for the weekend)
  • Fall Fiesta Form due Monday (SUPER EXCITING EVENT! Please attend! There is awesome food, events, face painting...throwing balloons at teachers!)
Again if they have already brought it in, they didn't write it down. We started sharing our all about me bags with Rohaan kicking it off. He demonstrated our learner profile "Being a risk taker."

Afterwards, we went to PE with Mrs. Jans.

When we came back we buckled down and did our first math assessment. This was a pre-assessment on our upcoming unit for "Patterning and Problem Solving" The students worked extremely hard on this test and showed a lot of determination and perseverance. This diagnostic test is for me to see where the students are with their learning so far in this unit. Next week we will dive into Math Makes Sense and begin our Math Centres!

After, we went for first lunch and recess.

Next the students had Music with Mr. Oliver and got to explore using Boomwhackers!

Afterwards,  we continued our "All About Me" bags. It was exciting to see the objects and pictures they brought it, as well as how respectful our everyone was while our friends were presenting.

Then we went to French with Mme. Stella.

Next, was our second lunch and recess.

Again we had our "All About Me" presentations. Not everybody got to go today, so the rest of the students will go on Monday. I'm very proud of all the students who were risk takers today! Presenting isn't always easy but they did an amazing job.

Finally, to round off the week we had our final house games which consisted of a hula hoop pass (with our bodies!). Theta won for the PYP and Kappa won for the teachers.

Then it was home time. Have a wonderful and restful weekend. I'm looking forward to our first full week next week!

Cheers!

Thursday, 7 September 2017

Bonjour!

To start off the day we had our second house games which consisted of a relay race using scooter boards, a ball toss, and a bean bag balance walk. Zeta came out on top!

Then we went to Physical Education with Mrs. Jans. (We have PE everyday, but the students don't change their clothes for PE just their shoes. On Mondays and Wednesdays students come dressed in their PE uniforms)

After a packed morning we wrote our agendas, in which the notes for today are:

  • Bring in headphones
  • Read for 20 minutes
  • Student handbook form
  • All about me bag for tomorrow
  • Fall Fiesta Form
  • Trip Form
If your child already brought in forms they didn't write it down again.

Afterwards, we started math! Our first unit is on patterning and place value. Today, we investigated the base ten blocks; looking specifically at hundreds, tens and ones units. We discussed why each block is each value. Afterwards, I gave students specific values to build houses, buildings and structures with their values. (e.g. 4 hundreds, 3 tens, 6 ones).

After math it was time for lunch and recess.

After students completed an "All About Me" banner. Students created a self portrait, and shared their favourite subject, hobby, animal, food, and what they want to be when they grow up!

Then students went to their first French lesson of the year with Mme. Stella.

After French it was time for second lunch and recess.

After, recess, we began to introduce our UOI for this unit which is All for One and One for All in How We Organise Ourselves. Today we looked at four learner profiles (Risk-taker, caring, inquirer, and open minded) and we completed a graffiti activity where students discussed and wrote down  as we learned and explained what being an Inquirer, risk-taker, caring, and open-minded means.

Today our class read-aloud was a story titled "The Day the Crayons Quit" we had very interesting discussions today and I LOVE how open minded the students were discussing the colour pink's role in the story.

Lunch Money:
September lunch payments are due tomorrow!

Cheers! Have a wonderful evening!

Wednesday, 6 September 2017

First day of school!

Wow! What an amazing first day! We had a great day getting to know each other and what we did over the summer holidays.

To start off we participated in a name game to learn each other's names and some interesting facts about each other. I am very excited that I have a class of such active students!

The students then went to Physical Education with Mrs. Jans.

When the students returned from PE we created our desk name cards with a picture to describe themselves. As they showed off their artistic side I helicoptered around to the students to ask them what their picture means to them and why they drew it.

Afterwards we completed an "All About Me" activity in which students anonymously filled out a sheet and then used a coloured pencil to guess who it belonged to in our class. I was quite stumped on a lot of sheets!

Then we had first lunch and recess.

After recess the students had Music with Mr. Oliver.

And then it was time for the House Games! It was an intense battle of musical chairs with students representing all grades in the PYP and MYP program. There was a great deal of team spirit and sportsmanship displayed throughout the games. Kappa came out the winner for the students and Theta took home for the teachers!

Then we had second lunch and recess.

After recess we joined with Miss Jasolka's class to participate in some more icebreaker activities. We played a game called "The wind blows west..." where students were able to share what they did in the summer, hobbies, likes and dislikes.

When we came in, we co-constructed our classroom rules and were inspired by Kid President! The students came up with rules and we put together a contract which everyone signed.

To finish off the day we started to create a birthday card. We did not get to finish but the idea for this is that when it is someone's birthday they will get a card that another classmate made on their special day!

The agenda for today was:
-Bring in headphones for listening to reading
-Read for 20 minutes
-All about me bag

Since we did agendas in the morning there were some additional forms sent out later that included the Fall Fiesta, and trip letter!

Have a restful night! See you tomorrow!

Cheers!
