Today's agenda notes:
-Students photos can be e-mailed to me or brought to be scanned by April 20th
-Read for 20 minutes
-Spelling pg. 97-100
-Math worksheet - growing patterns
-Grade 3 spelling package
-Cursive up to pg. 91 [yes again]
-Workshop form

Zeta won, Kappa was in second, and Theta was in third.

No PE today as Miss Yustin, after we had Easter sharing time.
At our morning assembly we had a house game which was a 'egg in the spoon race'

For math today we looked at growing pattern with geometric figures. Students started to investigate this last week during our activity centres.

First, we displayed a pattern of circles, the first with one circle, then two, then three which grew horizontally. Students accurately figured out that the next frame would be four circle horizontally.
We then discussed that when you draw each picture it is called a frame.

Students were then given a pattern block to draw a growing pattern which consisted of five frames. Here, we tackled sme misconceptions through our inuiry that the growing patterns must all be growing the same way each time; this means that it can't grow horizontally, the vertically, then vertically. It's not a growing pattern then.

As a challenge students were asked to create a table to show their growing patterns. Many were able to apply the the first column is the frame then the next column is the number of shapes they traced.

After we discussed how to make the table and write the pattern rule. Students helped complete the table without drawing the trapezoids but using the patterns they recognised and then writing the pattern rule.

After they worked on their worksheets.

After first recess, we had spelling. For group 2a it a review lesson of the past 5 spelling lessons. Study all the words the spelling test will be on any of these words.

For group 2b, the review will be next week. Here are the words:
1. rained
2. prayed
3. studied
4. cleaning
5. thanked
6. acted
7. worried
8. helped
9. copying
10. flying
11. hurried
12. married
13. dressing
14. camping
15. replied
16. trying
17. repairing
18. swaying
19. spied
20. multiplied

They are learning about endings [suffixes] to base words [root words].

After we had UOI. We played a game of 'I spy' for materials. After we worked on identifying objects that are made of different materials. Some objects have more than one material.

Then we had French with Mme. Stella.

After second recess, we had another UOI lesson. We looked at how structures are stable and strong. We watched a Bill Nye the Science Guy video. Before watching students we asked to think about what makes a building stable and strong. They were able to apply that the structure is important! The shape, and a wider base. This is why in sports they always say get low and widen your stance!
After watching the video, we learned about:
Tension and compression and what makes structures stable. Students learned how multiple eggs can old a brick because the force is spread out among the eggs.

We discussed how some buildings are dome-shaped in order to spread out the force, How some are wider at the bottom, how some bridges use multiple cables for support, and how vey tall buildings are flexible and actually move at the top! YIKES. Check out some information about the Willis Tower, and the John Hancock Tower in Chicago.
