We had our February award winner's assembly this morning celebrating the learner profile 'Open-minded'. Aashrith was our winner for February.
We had PE with Miss Yustin.
For math today we looked at identifying reflections [flips] using pattern blocks and pictures.
They were very excited to use the mira's! Many of them initially put it over their eyes to see red and blue.
We started off reviewing what slides [translations], and turns [rotations] are, and then we asked where have students seen a reflection.
The mirror, metal objects, clean cars and in water.
We pulled out a mirror to ask what do you notice about the letters on your school uniform crest in the mirror? [They are backwards]
We then explained that mirrors reflect opposites. So Alister helped me demonstrate. We stood facing each other and both touched our left shoulder, we noticed that they were they appeared to be the opposite so in order for us to match I had to touch my right should and he touched his left.
We then moved on to explaining that reflections can be vertical, horizontal, and diagonal, and that the line they flip over is called the reflection line.
I modeled how to use a mira and then students were asked to draw a reflection of three shapes with vertical, horizontal, and diagonal reflections.
They were really amazed.
'whoooooaaaa it's like a ghost'
'magic!!!'
'Wowwww!!!'
Then we worked on our worksheet, a homework package for the weekend has been sent home since they have finished their sheets in class!
For our spelling test the bonus words for 2a were:
1. horn
2. hurt
3. germ
4. smart
5. shark
Bonus words for 2b were:
1. quizzes
2. cities
3. parties
4. matches
5. tomatoes
Students received some more time to work on their UOI summatives.
Today's TRIBES activity was about 'What do you do outside of school that makes you special' We all shared by choice what we do. Many students shared about their participation in sports, arts, dance or other extra-curriculars. We talked about how it makes us unique and special and to be proud of it!
We also revisit our classroom rules today to reinterate how to be caring, open-minded, show praise, and respect eachother.
