Today's agenda notes are:
-Read for 20 mins
-Math worksheet (on sorting three attributes, and graphs)
-PD Day Friday (no school)
-Kindness day Monday $2-$5 donate for an Oak Leaf and you will get to wear casual clothes!

We started our morning off with announcements and the Remembrance Day assembly.

We received  a very good presentation from our friends in grade 10. We know that it is the 99th year of Remembrance and we remember and on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour we will spend a moment of silence to remember those who sacrificed their lives to allow us to live in freedom and peace.

We went straight to PE this morning and after returning from PE we did our agendas and spelling test. The bonus words this week were also long O words. They were:

11) pillow
12) grown
13) throat
14) oak
15) goal

After spelling we had math: we reviewed sorting with three attributes and then moved on to reading and interpreting bar and pictographs.

Check out this video if needed: https://www.mathplayground.com/video_bar_graphs.html

We looked at a pictograph and interpreted how many people rented each type of movie. Since each box represents 10 videos we knew we have to count by 10's so for:

Science Fiction - 40 videos were rented
Comedy - 70 videos
Action - 60 videos
Drama - 30 videos
Kids - 50 videos
Romance - 20 videos

We then asked which movie type was the most rented, the least, and how do you know?
Also we asked:
How many more comedy videos were rented than drama videos and we learned we have to see how many comedy there are (70) and how many drama videos (30) and subtract them. So there are 40 more comedy videos rented.

We could also count the movie symbols and see that there are 4 more symbols for comedy and since each symbol represents 10 that is 40!

We then also looked at the same data on a bar graph and learned how to read and interpret a bar graph.

We know what the bar is about by the Title

We know that the Number of Videos is an important title so we know that tells us how many videos were rented.

We know that the Category tells us the type of video rented.

First we ask a question such as "How many action videos were rented?"  So we have to find the action category and go across horizontally and line it up with the number of videos.

We then worked on our worksheets. On Monday we will collect data in tallies about our favourite fruit and make our own bar graph using that data and we will also be learning how to interpret circle graphs.

Afterwards we went to first lunch and recess.

Next, we started our science fair we talked about the scientific procedure and started off our scientific question:

1) Does the temperature of water affect the growth of rock candy crystals? and
2) Do rock candy crystals grow better in hot, cold, or room temperature water?

We discussed that:

Solutes are the substance being dissolved and solvents are substances doing the dissolving.
Together they make a solution.

For our experiment sugar is the solute and water is the solvent.
We talked about what a hypothesis is and formulated our own in partners.

The words If...and then were important in making our hypotheses. We use these words instead of I think because we are scientists and are showing confidence in our hypotheses.

Then we went to music and French and second lunch and recess.

After recess we began our experiments. We had three variables:
Hot boiling water
Room temperature
Cold Icy water!

First we mixed three cups of sugar with one cup of boiling water. Then everyone helped stir so that the sugar dissolved. Once it was dissolved we added the food colouring. Then we stirred some more and poured it into the mason jars.

We then repeated the steps for the room temperature and cold water.

We will be observing these in the next few days to see changes. It will take about a week and when it is complete we will do our analysis and formulate our conclusion.

We finished off with some golden time! :)

Have a wonderful weekend. Remember no school tomorrow!
