Today we spend time practicing for Arts night.
For math, we started our new unit on
GEOMETRY
To start off, we activated our prior knowledge. We examined a picture on the board of children playing at the beach and described all the shapes we saw. Students applied their knowledge from our last unit of inquiry to describe cylinders, some words came out such as prisms, curved, straight, solids, shapes, spheres came out.
We reviewed what attributes are and introduced new attributes to decribe shapes...introducing.....
CURVED, STRAIGHT, LENGTH, AND DIRECTION
We played a guess who game in which students had shapes taped to their back and had to go around the classroom asking eachother about their shape. The questions had to be based on attributes. As you can see these weren't regular shapes.
Students may not have 100% accurately drawn their shapes after, but were very close!!
After we discussed that parallel lines are lines that are the same distance apart and never meet. We learned that arrows show directions of these lines.
We also learned about hatch marks and how hatch marks are used to show equal sides.
If the sides are different we either use a single hatch mark or a double hatch mark.
For UOI today, we worked on assessing our prior knowledge of what we know about endangered and extinct animals. Students also recalled facts about predators and preys as well as drawing and labelling animals on the food chain.
We were treated to the MYP 'Battle for Juliet' play in the afternoon!
