Making Change
Making Change 2
Measuring Capacity

This morning we had our monthly award assembly. We celebrated to learner profile risk-taker. Our award winner this month is Jad.

After we had a house game which was a relay race with a ping pong ball and a spoon. Theta won with Kappa in second and Zeta in third.

For math today we learned about estimating and measuring mass in grams and kilograms.

We learned that the correct vocabulary to use when most people talk about weight is mass.

We had a joke...well...it was kind of funny...

Me: So we do not ask people what their weight it, or how much do you weigh?
Students: So we ask them their mass?
Me: We probably shouldn't ask them their mass either (haha)

Anyways to the lesson.

We explored using the balance scales and reviewed that when one side is lower it's mass is greater than the object on the other side. If they are balanced then the mass of both objects are the same.

Students experimented with various objects in the classroom.

We were also introduced to kilograms and grams. Students got to feel a 1kg weight and we brainstormed some items that weight approximately 1kg. We learned that 1kg is 1000g and that the prefix kilo means one thousand - just like in kilometres as well. We also looked at other weights that had a mass of 20kg, 10kg, 5kg, and 2kg.
Each group had their own balance scale to work with.

After we inquired how to measure an object using the weights that we had.
We found out that we would put the object on one side of the scale and then slowly add the weights to the other side until they are balanced, and then added up all of the small weights we used.
Rayna worked towards finding out the mass of the stapler, we added the small weights up after to total 135g.

We tried it with a stapler and found out that it is approximately 135g.

We then moved on the working on our worksheets

After we had first lunch and recess. When we returned Rayna and Aashyra practiced their speeches in front of the class. We had some great feedback such as: make sure we don't have our hands in our pocket, ask questions to engage the audience, pause at times to create an effect and memorising and speaking louder.

Students then had the time to practice their speeches or practice the UOI summative presentation.

Then we had music with Mr. Oliver and French with Mme. Stella.

After we started our UOI presentations.

Here is a look at the first few presentations.

We had some really neat holidays some that took place over the course of a few days and some that were on one special day. We provided each other with our feedback as two stars and a wish

Then we got ready for home. More presentations tomorrow!
