-Math worksheet [equal parts]
For math today we started our new unit which is on FRACTIONS.
Today we looked at representing fractions as part of a whole using concrete materials [pattern blocks]
We started off talking about sharing and how you would share something equally. An awesome answer came up that we have to divide!
We looked at a pizza that was split into 8 equal triangles, and said this would be called eighths.
We discussed how if there are two equal parts they are halves, if there are three - thirds, four - fourths or quarters!
We created an anchor chart.
We really reinforced that the parts must be equal.
After we used pattern blocks to create figures and then name their parts.
Students could only one one pattern block per figure or else it isn't equal.
We swapped papers and continued.
After we worked on our worksheets.
Then, we went for first lunch and recess.
After, we had a library visit with Miss Hayward. We also got to choose a book to take home and read.
They are due back February 15th.
We then returned to class and read Chapter 4 of Horrible Harry and the Holidaze.
We wrote jot notes of the chapter including the beginning, middle and end. After second recess students will write their retell in their journal.
Then we had French with Mme. Stella.
After second recess we continued writing our retell.
Then we started our new UOI unit. SIMPLE MACHINES.
We created a K,W, L chart about simple machines. Most students associated cars, and transportation with simple machines but those are complex machines so we did some scaffolding to think about it as ways you can push or pull an object or load from one space to another.
After we watched a video to learn more about them. We learned afterwards the six different types of simple machines.
Then we continued writing our retells of chapter 4. We will continue writing them tomorrow.
